The restoration of fine mercurial barometers takes an enormous amount of patience, a love for the old and broken, and the tenacity to re-create by hand, what was once admired in another age.
In the 1970's, Robert Nicholls and his father-in-law Graeme Piper spent many hours making mercurial stick barometers. These beautiful instruments of weather forecasting, had long held a fascination for Graeme, and Robert soon discovered that same sense of curiosity.
Sadly, Robert passed away in March 2009. These beautiful pieces of a bygone era, are now a testament to his knowledge and workmanship, and to the intricate techniques he employed in restoring these instruments to their former glory.
